Copaiba - Benefits and Uses
Copaiba - What Is It?
This month you can purchase Copaiba for 15% off at doTERRA. That's pretty exciting! Copaiba is one of those oils that has so many benefits. It can support cardiovascular, immune, and digestive system health when taken internally; it has antioxidant benefits; it can be calming and soothing when used internally; it can promote clean, smooth skin and reduce the appearance of blemishes; and it can aid in relieving pain.
Copaiba comes from the copaiba tree in South America. For many years, the natives of Brazil have used Copaiba for their health practices.

Copaiba and CBD
You will often see comparisons between Copaiba and CBD. Why? Let's look at them a little.
They can both affect the endocannabinoid system (ECS). What is that? This system is throughout the central and peripheral nervous system. It "helps maintain internal balance." ("Copaiba vs. CBD: What's the Difference?" doTERRA blog.) Without getting too much into the science of Copaiba, it contains beta-caryophllene (BCP) which directly binds to receptors in your ECS. CBD does not bind directly to the receptors. BCP (which, remember, is found in Copaiba) can have a faster more powerful change in the body than CBD.

Copaiba Oil and Softgels
As I mentioned above there are many benefits from taking Copaiba internally.
doTERRA offers it in the form of an essential oil and as a softgel. Either is a great way to use it. The softgel just makes it easy to enjoy the internal benefits. You can buy either through these links.
One thing I love about doTERRA is they harvest the oils from the indiginous region they grow in. This helps create employment opportunities for the people in those areas and betters their lives. They also strive for pure oils. When you buy a bottle of oil from doTERRA, you know you are getting what the label says is in the bottle. There are no hidden fillers or dilutions.
Ways to Use Copaiba
So now that you've learned a little about Copaiba, let's talk about some specific ways to use it!
Internally - We've talked about the many benefits Copaiba has when taken internally. You can enjoy these through the softgel mentioned above, or with the essential oil. Just add about two drops of the oil to your water, tea, or juice. You could also put the oil in a veggie cap.
Smooth, Clear Skin - To enjoy some of Copaiba's skin benefits add a drop or two to a carrier oil or to your facial moisturizer.
Skin Blemishes - Copaiba can also help reduce the appearance of skin blemishes. You can dab a little Copaiba directly on the blemish. Make sure you test for skin sensitivity first. If there is a sensitivity, dilute with a carrier oil. I also found this roll-on recipe at Drips and Drops.
- 4 drops Copaiba essential oil
- 2 drops Tea Tree essential oil
- 2 drops Lemon essential oil
- Tamanu Carrier Oil
- 10 mL roller bottle
Put oils in the bottle, then top with carrier oil. Gently roll between your hands to mix. Apply directly to blemishes.
Help Soothe & Calm - Copaiba can also help soothe and calm your nervous system. To enjoy this benefit take Copaiba internally. You can also place a drop or two under your tongue. To help create a peaceful environment, diffuse two drops of Copaiba and four drops of Serenity. You could also combine a few drops of Copaiba with your body wash, and then add it to a bath.
Breathe Easier - To help support your respiratory function try diffusing three drops of Copaiba and Breathe.
Fresh Breath - Copaiba can help freshen your breath and promote oral cleanliness. To achieve this just swish two drops of Copaiba and one drop of Peppermint oil.
Head and Neck Tension - Many of us have felt the pain that comes with head and neck tension. A roller bottle with Copaiba and other essential oils may help ease that tension. This recipe came from Sparkles to Sprinkles.
- 1 tbsp vitamin E
- 5-10 drops Helichrysum essential oil
- 5-10 drops Eucalyptus essential oil
- 5-10 drops Frankincense essential oil
- 5-10 drops Copaiba essential oil
- 5-10 drops Lavender essential oil
Add the essential oils and vitamin E in a roller bottle. Roll between your hands to gently mix the ingredients. Roll on your temples and forehead when experiencing pain from head and neck tension.

Soothe Muscles - We've all been there. Aches and pains. They may be caused by strenuous activity or just everyday life. Pain and nerve support is one of my favorite benefits of Copaiba. There are a few ways to use Copaiba to achieve these benefits. One is to apply two to three drops the the sore area and combine with the use of Deep Blue Rub. doTERRA also has a premixed roller bottle that includes Copaiba and is intended to soothe your body after a day of activity. It is called Rescuer and it includes Copaiba, Lavender, Spearmint, Zanthoxylum, and fractionated coconut
Here are a few roller recipes you can make yourself.
Roller Recipe #1
- 5 drops Copaiba essential oil
- 10 drops Deep Blue essential oil
- 5 drops Lavender essential oil
- 5 drops Peppermint essential oil
Combine all oils in a 10 mL roller bottle, top with fractionated coconut oil, and gently roll between your hands to combine the ingredients.
Roller Recipe #2
- 10 drop Lemongrass essential oil
- 5 drops Peppermint essential oil
- 10 drops Copaiba essential oil
- 5 drops Wintergreen essential oil
Combine all oils in a 10 mL roller bottle, top with fractionated coconut oil, and gently roll between your hands to combine the ingredients.
Promote Restful Sleep - I think it is safe to say everyone needs a little help getting a better night's rest at times. Try diffusing two drops of Copaiba, Vetiver, Lavender, and Wild Orange to help with this.
Personal Fragrance - Copaiba has a spicy, woody smell. You can combine it with other essential oils to create your own personal fragrance. It combines well with Roman Chamomile, Cedarwood, Sandalwood, Frankincense, Siberian Fir, Jasmine, and Ylang Ylang. Have fun trying it with different oils to create your own unique fragrance. Best of all, it will be natural and non-toxic!
Aromatic - We've already talked about a few ways to diffuser Copaiba. Here are a few more blends to try.

So now that we've scratched the surface of how to use Copaiba, I would love to hear from you. If you try any of these blends or recipes, leave me a comment letting me know what you think! Or you can comment with your favorite use of Copaiba!
